Cardiometabolic Multimorbidity and Mortality

Summary

Cardiometabolic multimorbidity is the co-occurrence of diabetes, stroke and myocardial infarction. It is associated with substantially greater mortality and loss of life expectancy than any one condition alone, making prevention of second and third events a major clinical priority and motivating multimodal disease risk prediction.

Evidence

The Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration analyzed 689,300 participants from 91 cohorts and compared results with 499,808 UK Biobank participants. Mortality risk rose sharply with each additional cardiometabolic condition, and combinations were associated with large reductions in life expectancy.[1]

The results describe population-level associations rather than the effect of any specific intervention. Differences in disease duration, treatment and ascertainment remain relevant when applying estimates to individuals.
